Genre: Fantasy

Publication Date: 1988

Book Overview & Introduction

In the year 1987, Brazilian author Paulo Coelho wrote the novel The Alchemist in a short span of two weeks. Coelho mentioned that he could write at this pace because the story was already written in “his soul.” The book, originally written in Portuguese, was published in 1988. The English edition was published in 1993. Three decades later, The Alchemist is nothing short of a global phenomenon. It has been translated into 67 languages, making Coelho the world’s most translated living author according to the 2009 Guinness Book. It has topped the bestseller lists in several countries and continues to sell millions of copies every year.

At its heart lies the simple story of a young boy’s quest for a hidden treasure. Under this surface, however, is an unforgettable allegory of the journey of life itself. Santiago, a young Spanish shepherd who tends to his flock on the Andalusian hills, dreams about a hidden treasure. One day he finds enough courage in his heart to pursue his dreams across distant lands. He sells his flock and buys a ticket to Tangiers. Led by the eponymous alchemist, he traverses Africa—Egypt, in particular. The fascinating experiences and encounters impart invaluable wisdom not only to the protagonist but also to the reader. It is as much a spiritual journey as it is a physical one.

The time period during which the events of the book unfold is not stated. Nonetheless, one can reasonably assume that the events take place at least 100 years ago. The dominant theme of the book is that of finding one’s destiny by listening to one’s heart and fulfilling that same destiny; doing so amounts to fulfilling what the book calls one’s “Personal Legend.” This universal message is conveyed in a simple, poetic language with a liberal use of symbolism and religious iconography.

Coelho weaves magic with his words, offering precious nuggets of wisdom that resonate with his readers. While the book’s popularity has undeniably grown by leaps and bounds, not all critics have been kind. The New York Times called the book “more self-help than literature.” However, readers across the world continue to celebrate this book, with many claiming that it inspired them to follow their dreams despite setbacks and challenges.
